The gates at the Iowa State Fair haven’t officially opened, but you couldn’t tell by all the activity on the Grand Concourse Sunday. While most vendors are still setting up their concession stands, Chantay Crews is already open for business.
“Corn dogs, fresh lemonade and limeade,” says Crews.
Her family owns Westmoreland Concessions. People stopped by today get a first taste of the state fair staple.
“It’s kind of like my Dad says, you just don’t mess with corn dogs. You do it right and you leave it alone,” says Crews.
Her Dad started coming to the state fair in 1988. Now, she and her family run five concession stands.
Every year, along with the crowd favorites, there`s always something new for fairgoers to sample on a stick.
“The strawberry smoothie on a stick, the shrimp corn dog and a bacon wrapped riblet,” says Lori Chappell with the Iowa State Fair.
This year, fans can vote for their favorite food. For the thrill seekers, a ride is back by popular demand on the midway.
“It’s the only one in North America. It’s the Moonraker. It’s one of those death-defying rides,” says Chappell.
It wouldn’t be the fair without a trip to see the Butter Cow. This year’s theme pays tribute to the Lincoln Highway and Abraham Lincoln.
For fairgoers, opening day can’t come soon enough.
“Oh, I just love the fair. Everything about it,” says Bobby Winn of Ollie.
The fun starts Wednesday at 6:15 PM with the Iowa State Fair Parade in downtown Des Moines. The fair runs from August 8th to the 18th.
