More details are being released about an officer involved shooting that happened in Council Bluffs over the weekend.
Investigators say 52-year-old Michael Hannum is still in the hospital, in critical but stable condition, after he was shot by a Council Bluffs police officer.
On Friday, Hannum had been listed as a fugitive from the Federal Bureau of Prisons – Federal Residential Reentry Center in Council Bluffs. At the time of the encounter, the officers did not know authorities were looking for Hannum.
Early Sunday evening, a woman told police officers Aaron Gutierrez and Jason Burleigh she saw a suspicious person at a construction site, bleeding from his hands. When the officers got to the scene, they found Hannum with self-inflicted cuts to his wrists.
Officers say he was also armed with a sharp, cutting instrument. Officers say Hannum was not cooperative, and became aggressive.
That’s when Officer Burleigh tried to use his taser, but it didn’t work. Hannum then moved closer to the officers, that’s when Officer Gutierrez fired his weapon, hitting the suspect twice.
The Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case, and officials are looking for the woman who originally alerted the officers to the suspicious person.
