The Department of Defense is cutting the number of furlough days under the sequester cuts. It’s a decision that affects over 1,000 Iowa National Guard employees.

Civilian Guard employees were told they’d have to take 11 unpaid furlough days by the end of the year due to $37 billion in spending cuts mandated by sequestration.

However, they’ll now be required to take just six furlough days.

Rep. Loebsack says the decision is encouraging but bemoans Congress, “While today’s announcement by Secretary Hagel is encouraging news for the men and women at the Rock Island Arsenal, it is unconscionable that civilian workers were forced to take a pay cut because of dysfunction in Washington.”
