A construction worker is in critical condition after he was run over by a construction vehicle Monday night.

It happened in a construction zone on Interstate 35-80 near mile marker 135, just north of Des Moines, around 8:30 p.m.

The Iowa State Patrol say a worker walked into the path of an excavator. Troopers say 50-year-old Trinidad Banderas, of Marshalltown, was then run over by the front tires. His injuries are believed to be serious.

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident.

The 2nd Avenue exit ramp was closed for about an hour because of the accident.
