POSSIBLE LAWSUIT: Police Investigated For Brutality
The Davenport Police Department is at the center of a civil rights investigation after a video was released of an officer fighting a shoplifter.
Brandie Redell admits she was stealing from Von Maur in Northpark Mall back in February but says while being questioned by police, one officer held her legs while another punched her in the head and face.
The officer, Scott Crow, said he hit Redell because she bit his finger.
Redell admits to biting him because she said at that point there was nothing else she could do to get him off of her.
Von Maur security cameras caught the whole thing. Crow can be seen lunging at Redell and making the first contact
“I was asking him why was this happening and I was crying, I was screaming, begging for someone to help me,” says Redell.
Davenport Police Chief Frank Donchez says an internal investigation into the incident was done and officers were found to have violated policy and disciplined. He wouldn’t release what the discipline was, citing personnel issues.
The two officers involved are back on street patrol. Donchez says the case didn’t merit anyone being fired.
A federal civil right lawsuit is in the works against the department.
