DES MOINES, Ia. -- A group protesting the consumption of animal products vandalized the Butter Cow at the Iowa State Fair over the weekend.
Iowans for Animal Liberation is taking credit for the vandalism. In an e-mail to Channel 13, the group admitted its members hid in the Agriculture Building until after closing Saturday night then broke into the cooler that houses the butter cow.
The group poured red paint over the sculpture and painted the message “Freedom for all” on the window of the display.
After the vandalism was discovered, butter cow sculptor Sarah Pratt was able to clean up the sculpture in time for the opening of the Agriculture Building on Sunday.
The Iowa State Patrol says the investigation into the vandalism is ongoing.
