The Urbandale little leaguers lost to Newark, Delaware Friday night 6-3 in Williamsport.  The nerves definitely got to U-dale in the beginning.  Newark scored 5 runs in the first inning, then just 1 after that.  Give credit to Urbandale, they very easily could have folded up shop  and packed it in.  They didn’t.  Urbandale made it respectable despite coming up short.  U-dale now moves to the consolation bracket, they face Great Lakes champ Michigan Saturday night at 7:00.

I can’t believe the size of some of these kids in Williamsport.  Pitchers that are 6’4″?  Some of these guys look like they’re Seniors in high school, not 11-12 years old.  California pitcher Grant Holman threw a 7 inning no-hitter.  Holman is 6’4″ 166 pounds.  I don’t think I weighed 166 till I was 17.  I’m 6’3″ now.  Yowza.

Kentucky basketball just offered Tyler Ulis a highly touted PG recruit.  Ulis also has an offer from the Hawkeyes.  In fact the Hawks and Fran McCaffery were the first big school to get in on Ulis, last year.  Ulis’ final four, Iowa, Kentucky, Michhawkeye bballigan State, and USC.  If McCaffery somehow gets Ulis to commit, you could argue it’s the biggest recruit to ever sign with Iowa.  It’s going to be hard to beat MSU and Kentucky.

Speaking of the Hawks they won again in Europe, 82-60 over the AMW All-Stars of France.  I have no idea how good the AMW All-Stars are, but these are professional teams they’re playing against, and winning never hurts.  This trip will only help Iowa who has a chance to be really, really good.

Oh wait, we have football first….

Ryne Sandberg is finally getting his shot in the majors, with the Phillies.  For some reason I have to think if Sandberg was a really good manager he would have already gotten a chance with someone, but who knows.  He’s now the interim manager, and likely coaching for his next gig or to become Philadelphia’s full-time manager.

john autographBecause Michael Admire is on the road in Williamsport I won’t be able to work at the Iowa State fair this year.  I know everyone will miss me, if you’d like an autograph picture let me know I’ll be glad to get you one, I have plenty.
