With an Islamic and Cultural Center Bosniak’s imam facing charges for sexual abuse and exploitation, founder Elvedin Sivac says his faith has been put to the test.
Sivac says, “It’s really sad what happened to him. He don’t deserve this.”
Sivac says he’s known the accused, Nermin Spahic, since he came to America in 2005. Sivac says, “He would try to help anyone he can.”
Hoping to help, he says Spahic went to the women to perform the Islamic equivalent of an exorcism called a sihr. According to Sivac the ceremony involves reading from the Quran and rubbing oil on different parts of the body.
Nijaz Besic says Spahic performed a similar ceremony on his wife and daughter. Besic says, “I don’t’ believe it.”
Not sure of the answer to this test, supporters of Spahic say their faith gives them hope for the future. Sivac says, “This is good experience to us this is going to bring us even closer and it already has. People here will come together again.”
Spahic was released Tuesday after posting bail. The mother and daughter have issued a no contact order against him.
