STILL RECOVERING: Lt. Gonzalez ‘Lucky To Be Alive’

In July, Lieutenant Joe Gonzalez was severely injured after a delivery truck pinned him at the World Food Prize Building in Des Moines.

For the past month, Gonzalez spent time in the hospital, now he’s at home recovering still replaying the moment when a delivery truck pinned him. The accident crushed 13 ribs and collapsed both lungs.

“I remember it too well. I can hear the sounds of the popping of my ribs,” says Gonzalez.

Gonzalez says he doesn’t blame the driver for his injuries.

“That same day I was at the hospital, twice I asked people to reach out to him and to tell him ‘hey it’s not your fault and I don’t blame you it was a freak accident.’”

Prior to the accident, Gonzalez was planning to retire from the police department next spring , however he says he probably will not be returning to the police station.

“I’ve had a long great career there but I don’t think I’m going to recover enough to get back to work, but I’m happy and at peace with the decision and I’m going to enjoy life now.”

Gonzalez says he’s been overwhelmed by the support of family, friends and the community.

“I will be forever grateful really for everything that’s happened as far as the support and the outpouring, it’s touched everybody.”
