The Iowa Department of Health has a warning for people trying to lose weight — don’t eat tape worms.

The medical director for the Department of Health, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk, says she recently heard from a physician who was treating a patient who intentionally swallowed a tape worm.

The parasite absorbs food from your body but can also ruin your health or possibly kill you.

It’s illegal to buy tapeworms but they are still sold on the internet.

Authorities recommend conventional methods such as consuming less calories and doing more exercise as the best forms to lose weight.
