IMPROPER TREATMENT: Branstad To Take Action

Governor Branstad said he will take action this week to address allegations of improper treatment of troubled kids at the Iowa Juvenile Home.

However, the governor didn’t say what actions those would be.

Complaints have surfaced in the past few weeks about youths getting locked in solitary confinement for months at a time.

The state runs the Toledo facility.

“I want to take quick action on dealing with the culture that we have there,” Branstad said.

“I believe that we shouldn’t wait for the legislature and I intend to work with Chuck Palmer and the Department of Human Services and also with Disability Iowa and others that have expressed concerns to make sure that we take action.”

The governor’s announcement Monday comes the same day State Center’s Democratic Senator Steve Sodders called for action.

Sodders wants the Senate oversight committee to hold hearings about the alleged mistreatment.
