A Des Moines man was stabbed early Thursday morning while police say he was trying to break up a fight.

Police say they were called to the emergency room of a local hospital on a reported stabbing around 2:20 a.m. When they arrived, they found 26-year-old Javon Washington suffering from a single stab wound to his stomach.

Police say Washington told them the stabbing happened in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 3200 block of 30th Street. He went to the address to meet a friend and when he arrived saw three men fighting.

Washington tried to break up the fight and says he remembered being punched hard in the stomach, but looked down and saw that he had been stabbed. His friend drove him to the hospital but did not stick around to talk to police.

The injuries sustained by Washington are not considered life threatening.

Police say Washington old them he wasn’t sure if his friend was one of the men involved in the fight. Police are continuing the investigation.
