A Des Moines man is in the Polk County Jail after leading the Iowa State Patrol on a motorcycle chase at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour Thursday night.
Nineteen-year-old Stewart Waithanji is charged with felony eluding and several traffic violations in connection with the case.
According to an Iowa State Patrol incident report, a state trooper noticed Waithanji going at high speeds and making aggressive lane changes on I-80 at the east mix master a little before 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The trooper followed him as he exited the interstate at 2nd Avenue.
Waithanji noticed the trooper behind him and made signals that indicated he would pull over after turning the corner. Instead, once the light changed he took off. The State Patrol says at times, Waithanji’s speed topped 120 miles per hour.
The chase ended near the corner of NW 5th and NEW 45th Place. Troopers say Waithanji turned the bike into a residential property and laid the bike down on the lawn. He was taken into custody without incident.
Waithanji is being held on a bond of $5,000.
