FOR SALE: School District Selling Wind Turbine
Gov. Terry Branstad is pushing for more use of wind energy, but one of the first Iowa school districts to use wind power is selling its wind turbine.
The Akron-Westfield School District installed the turbine in 1999. It was one of the first districts to install a turbine. Since then it has powered both the school and the city.
School officials say the wind turbine broke down two years ago. After some initial repairs it stopped working again 18 months ago.
Now the school is looking for someone to buy it.
“We’ve been unsuccessful in finding anyone to lease it. We’re not willing to invest the amount of money it would take to fix it again. The district fixed it once already and it only ran for about six months,” says Randy Collins, superintendent of Akron-Westfield Schools.
The district says preliminary meetings with a potential buyer will take place this week but nothing is set in stone yet.
