COOLING SHELTERS: Staying Out Of The Heat
A Polk County cooling shelter will be open again Tuesday night for those trying to escape the heat.
The shelter is located at Zion Lutheran Church at 4300 Beaver Avenue in Des Moines. It will be open from 8:00 p.m. Tuesday to 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Cots, water, and food will be provided. No one will be admitted after 11:00 p.m. and pets are not allowed, unless it is a service animal.
If you have a pet and need to go to the cooling center, call 211. Polk County and the Animal Rescue League will arrange to care for your pet.
Authorities are urging people to check on friends and family, who don’t have air conditioning, at least twice daily.
Anyone needing a cool place during the day can go to the Salvation Army community centers. In Des Moines, they are on East 25th Court and Sixth Avenue. A center in Ames is also open on East Lincoln Way. The shelters will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through this Friday.
