An Urbandale man was killed early Wednesday morning when his motorcycle collided with an SUV in Des Moines.

Police were called to the accident at Hickman and 9th Street at 5:56 a.m.

They say 57-year-old Nicholas Otto was traveling east on Hickman when an oncoming westbound SUV driven by 51-year-old Katherine Bloch turned south in front of him at 9th Street. The motorcycle hit the SUV at its rear passenger door.

Otto was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

Police say neither the driver of the SUV or the motorcyclist were speeding at the time of the crash and they don’t believe either were impaired.

Investigators say Bloch failed to yield to Otto at the intersection. Charges are pending in the case.

Hickman was shut down for a few hours as police investigated and cleaned up the accident. It was reopened around 9:40 a.m.
