The City of Waverley is in the need for a mayor and so far no one filed paperwork but a college junior days he’s ready to take on the responsibility.

20-year-old Jacob Martin is a Wartburg student and is on the campaign trail.

Originally a Pella native, he has lived in Waverly the last two years while attending college.

The City says he’s eligible to run for mayor as he is 18, a US citizen and a resident of Iowa.

All he needs now are the required 33-signatures by September 19th.

Martin says he plans to establish permanent residency in Waverly this year.

“I know that there are a lot of people in town that are older than me that may have more experience here, but I definitely have the passion that I think it’s going to take to be the mayor of Waverly and I really want to try,” Martin said.

Waverly’s current mayor says he’s not running for re-election.

The city anticipates more candidates will come forward.
