Researchers at the University of Kansas’ School of Engineering are working on increasing safety at a dangerous intersection in Altoona with the use of a blue light system.

The city activated a Blue Light Confirmation System Friday at the intersection of 8th Street Southwest and 34th Avenue Southwest. It’s designed to help police identify and catch drivers who run red lights.

A blue light turns on as soon as the light turns red, then an officer sitting nearby can use the blue light as a visual cue as to who’s breaking the law.

The system will be used in Altoona for the next six months.
