BLIND TRAINING: Participants Crossfit Blindfolded

When Kelsey Aikin and Tracy Kraft first started CrossFit, Aikin says, “I was just so nervous.”

But after a year`s worth of working out. Aikin says this gym is like home.

Their newest challenge doesn`t involve adding on weight, time, or distance…instead, they`re taking something away. Kraft says, “There`s always the fear of the unknown and knowing that we don`t have our sight just is crazy.”

Wearing sleep shades Aikin says, “It`s like your depth perception is completely gone.”

The women had to feel their way through the workout. That’s what trainer Bettina Dolinsek does every day. Dolinsek says, “It’s allowing them to learn a nonvisual technique so they can continue to do something they`ve always done.”

Dolinsek says being blind is her obstacle, for others, it’s being tired or out of shape; and the true test for any athlete is finding a solution. Dolinsek says, “I just wanted them to walk away with learning how to problem solve, if you`re in a situation where you need to.”

When it’s Aikin’s turn to jump, her biggest obstacle isn’t sight…it’s fear of falling. Aikin says, “To have the blindfold on and not know where I can catch myself that makes me so nervous.”

But like her nerves on her first day of CrossFit, once she conquers it… she feels stronger than ever. A feeling of accomplishment Dolinsek hopes to share with everyone she trains.
