Iowa City has reached a nearly $2 million insurance settlement over last year’s costly landfill fire.

The agreement with the insurance company is for about half of the more than $3 million in damages after the May 2012 fire that destroyed a landfill cell.

Investigators concluded that hot content from a burn barrel or charcoal grill likely ignited an exposed tire layer of the cell. The fire burned for 15 days and covered more than seven acres.
