It took Urbandale fire fighters just minutes to arrive to the scene of a massive house fire, but they were too late to save a man sleeping inside.

“Shortly after fire fighters entered the front door we found the victim. He was deceased and later removed. That changed our operations at that point,” said Urbandale Fire Chief, Jerry Holt.

Fire fighters arrived at 2909 88th Court just after 3:30 AM.

88 year old Donald Running was found in his first floor bedroom.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the fire started in the basement and quickly spread to the first floor and attic.

Despite the victim’s age, neighbors say they’re surprised he was unable to escape.

“He was 88 years old but he wouldn’t have struggled because he was a goer and he was up early and moving every day,” said Pat Sullivan, a neighbor.

A renter also lived in the home but wasn’t there at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
