A wind farm in Story County is generating electricity — and tax revenue. Some of that revenue is being used to make a large expansion at a local recreational area.

“Zearing’s a very rural area of Story County, so this is an economic development piece for them,” says Carol Williams with Story County Conservation.

Two-point-seven million dollars from the windmill tax is going toward increasing the size of Dakins Lake.

A 15 acre lake will be added to the original five acre lake and that will allow more fishing. Thirty new campsites are being added along with a shower house.

The historic park was built in 1950. President Harry Truman even attended a field day there.

The ground breaking is being held Monday afternoon just east of Zearing.
