EASTER SEALS: Camp Sunnyside Getting Makeover

At Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside they provide year-round services to persons with disabilities including overnight camps.  It’s something the organization has been doing for 50 years.

“The services we provide in this organization are outstanding, but we haven`t always been proud of our facilities,” says CEO of Easter Seals Sherri Nielsen.

To help Hubbell Realty Company stepped in.

Two new cabins are being installed at the camp.

“Building Cabins for Campers” is a $2.4 million dollar project, being funded and built by Hubbell Realty Company

Jon Davis with Polk County Emergency Management says both cabins are being built to FEMA shelter standards; he visited the construction to make sure everything is on track.

“Some of the things we looked at were the construction, what are the walls made out of, how were they connected the roof, the ceiling, what kind of wind load it would be able to withstand, what the doors would be constructed of what kind of protections would go on windows,” says Deputy Director Davis.

The two 7,500 square foot cabins will house 45 guests and 16 staff each.

They are built to withstand 250 M.P.H. winds and will better protect the guests during severe weather.

“When storms come up we have to be very quick in our response because a lot of the individuals that we are supporting utilize walkers, or wheel chairs, and they just require a little bit more time to move. So having the storm shelters right inside the building will allow them to be able to get to the shelter much more quickly,” says Nielsen.

More than 100 workers will work around the clock to complete the project in just one week; normally a project of this size would take over a year.

“It`s a great reflection of the community that we live in and people coming together to make a difference,” says Nielsen.

On top of being FEMA approved, both cabin shelters also meet ADA standards.

A ribbon cutting showing off the new shelters is scheduled for Monday September 23, 2013 at 2:00 at Camp Sunnyside.
