The high temperatures and heat this late in the year is exceptional. But on September 9, Iowa set a triple-digit temperature record.
The last time that happened in Iowa was 60 years ago, in 1953.
Iowa temperatures have been in the triple digits for just 38 years since 1891, according to the Iowa State Climatologist Harry Hillaker.
Historically, 27 of the 38 years featured warmer and drier than usual conditions in August with below-normal September precipitation in 24 of those years. Only 10 of the 38 years experienced an earlier-than normal first frost.
