A De Soto man is in the Polk County Jail this morning after leading police on a 20 minute chase through Des Moines’ east side.

It began just before 1 a.m. at 12th and Cleveland.  Police tried to pull over 33-year-old Justin Wells for a traffic violation.

Instead of stopping, Wells took off.

He circled around the Cleveland, Guthrie area.

The chase went down E 9th and Court and along SE 14th and Park.

Police tried to stop the truck with stop sticks, but they did not work.

Wells eventually made his way to SE 8th and Porter Avenue where he turned into Lovejoy Elementary school.

Police attempted a pit maneuver and Wells fishtailed and hit a tree.

Police then hit his truck to stop him from going any further.

Wells immediately surrendered to police.

Both his truck and a police car were damaged and had to be towed from the scene.

Wells was wanted on a warrant out of Dallas County for a probation violation.

He now faces eluding charges, possession of narcotics and various traffic violations.
