Monday is the opening day for Hatch at the Kirkendall Library.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony started at 4:30 p.m. but Hatch in the library will stay open until 8 p.m. for the grand opening and open house.

Hatch is Iowa’s first makerspace in a library.  It will be a collaborative area to combine new technologies and creativity for projects.

Makerspaces are a new phenomenon, popping up in public and academic libraries.  The purpose of a makerspace is creating with technology by being creative with technology.

Hatch will give community members access to new things like a 3D printer, video and audio editing equipment as well as tools to digitize your old VHS, vinyl and cassette tapes.
