Des Moines Area Community College now has more room to train students in downtown Des Moines.
DMACC purchased the Capitol medical office building at 1300 Des Moines Street for $1.2 million. It was already leasing the second floor when the option came up to buy the facility.
The college was offering classes in the Iowa Building right next door, but the state decided to demolish the building.
The new facility is home to the nursing program and early childhood education. The college had just a month to install labs, computers, carpeting and complete renovations before fall classes started.
“Our issue has always been we have more students wanting to get into the program than we have the capacity. This facility allows us to expand the amount of capacity that we have particularly for training in downtown Des Moines,” says DMACC President Rob Denson.
More than 2,300 students are enrolled in DMACC’s 19 health and public service programs.
