The teenager accused of murdering his foster brother last month is pleading not guilty.

Cody Metzker-Madsen, 17, is charged with first degree murder in the death of five-year-old Dominic Elkins. The two lived together in a foster home in western Iowa.

Metzker-Madsen’s attorney entered a written plea Friday. He is also requesting a motion to transfer Metzker-Madsen to a juvenile detention center.

The Des Moines Register reports family members say Metzker-Madsen has the mental capacity of a five-year-old because he has a disability.

Metzker-Madsen’s trial is scheduled for November.
