Sen. Charles Grassley

Senator Charles Grassley announced Friday he intends to seek re-election.

The republican made the statement on public television show, Iowa Press.

During the interview, he went on to say he made up his mind a couple of months ago after democratic Senator Tom Harkin decided to retire in 2014.

He says if both senators retired, Iowa would have a lack of seniority in the Senate.

At 80-year old, Grassley is the second oldest senator. If he wins in 2016 and sees out his term he would be 89-years old.

Grassley was first elected to the US Senate in 1980.
