RIBBON CUTTING: New Cabins At Camp Sunnyside

The old cabins at Camp Sunnyside got a facelift.

In just one week, two state of the art cabins were built with the help of 2,000 workers.

Monday, a ribbon cutting was held to show off the cabins.

“It was amazing because I know what it`s going to mean for our campers and their families,” says President of Easter Seals Sherri Nielsen.

Nielsen says for over 50 years Camp Sunnyside has been providing services to persons with disabilities, but the current cabins were lacking and a lack of money prevented any upgrades.

“Our services are excellent but we have been providing services in buildings that don`t meet our quality, don`t meet our standards and we didn`t have the opportunity to do anything because of the cost,” says Nielsen.

Hubbell Realty Company stepped in to help fund the two million dollar project.

The two cabins include complete with indoor shower facilities and handicap accessible access for campers.

90 beds for campers and 60 beds for staff were built and donated by inmates in Iowa’s prison system.

“Iit really means a lot to our offender  work crew to know they are giving back to the community and make things better for the people involved,” says Bob Fairfax with Iowa Prison Industries.

Fairfax says the inmates also built all the lockers in the two cabins.

The beds frames, mattresses, and lockers were all made through a program at Anamosa State Penitentiary.

“The offenders learn skills so when they get released from prison they go out and become productive tax paying citizens and have the skills and abilities to go out and compete in the market place,” says Fairfax.

The lockers and beds added the finishing touches to the project.

“To have these beds that were made by people who are improving their life and growing their independence is a great thing it fits right in line with our mission,” says Nielsen.

Officials at Camp Sunnyside say this Friday the first group of campers will get to enjoy the new cabins.

Both cabins were also built to FEMA and ADA Standards.
