The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa is taking part in a Read-Out Tuesday, as it raises awareness of Banned Book Week.
The ACLU is highlighting 15 books that have been challenged for removal from Iowa libraries. Some of those books include “13 Reasons Why,” “Hoops,” “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” “Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies” and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”
References in the books range from sex to suicide to drugs.
There are two Read-Out events scheduled this week, where people will read aloud from banned or challenged books.
Tuesday, there is one at Simpson College at Kemp Campus Center from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Wednesday a Read-Out will be held at Iowa State University’s library at 11:00 a.m.
