Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller is urging the Food and Drug Administration to take action against electronic cigarette or e-cigarettes.
Miller and 35 other attorneys general want the FDA to regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products under the Tobacco Control Act.
Currently there are no federal age restrictions on the devices.
Batteries in the device heat the liquid nicotine, turning it into vapor to inhale.
Officials say makers are targeting youth with ads and by adding fruit and candy flavors.
According to a survey from 2011 to 2012 the percentage of youth who have tried or use e-cigarettes has roughly doubled.
Little is known about the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes.
