An eastern Iowa couple will replace their home for the second time in nine years.
“We did a lot of remodeling and a lot of hard work and this time we can’t do it,” said homeowner Keith Steger.
“We can’t save the woodwork this time,” Steger said.
A fire ripped through Keith and Judy Steger’s home in Delaware County on Friday. Officials said the fire started on the stove.
The couple lived there since losing their home in Elkader to flooding in 2004.
Friends along with the couple and their seven children spent the day cleaning out the furniture and saving photos that managed to survive the fire.
“You really can’t put it into words. You just deal with it, you know. You keep moving forward and you don’t look back,” the couple's son Jeremy Steger said.
“It’s just the way it is, you just have to suck it up and keep pushing forward,” he said.
The Stegers are planning on living in a spare building on their property.
A November benefit is being planned for the family.
