MURDER TRIAL: Judge Deliberates Hawkinson Ruling

Ronald Hawkinson

A Winterset man’s fate is now in the hands of a Polk County judge.

Ronald Hawkinson is on trial for two counts of first degree murder. He is accused of shooting dead of Sam Hidic and Robert Smoot at Seibert Trucking in Des Moines in May 2012.

Hawkinson waived his right to a jury trial, opting instead for a bench trial. The decision means a judge will have the sole say in his guilt or innocence.

Testimony and closing arguments concluded Monday.

The judge hasn’t set a date on when he will make his ruling.
