SHUTDOWN IMPACT: State Makes 180 Layoffs
The impact of the federal government shutdown continues to be felt in Iowa.
Two state departments announced temporary layoffs affecting 180 workers Wednesday, many of which were effective immediately.
The Department of Administrative Services says 69 Iowa Workforce Development employees will be laid off.
That includes 30 of the 34 OSHA health inspectors that oversee workplace safety, 15 who work with veterans’ disabilities, 6 are IT professionals and the rest are labor market information employees who process unemployment data.
The Iowa Department of Public Defense is also losing 111 employees temporarily.
Non-contract employees had their last day Wednesday while AFSCME contract workers have until October 17th if the shutdown hasn’t been resolved.
