A lightning strike during Friday morning’s storms is to blame for a fire that destroyed a garage in Des Moines.

Around 7:45 a.m., a person living at 300 59th Street thought heard lightning strike something nearby.

He went outside and didn’t see anything wrong, but around 9:15 a.m., a neighbor knocked on his door to tell him his garage was fully engulfed in flames.

Des Moines firefighters say there weren’t any vehicles in the garage, so they were able to put the fire out quickly.

The fire caused about $10,000 in damage.
