Families visiting Van Meter to honor their fallen veteran now have a place to gather.
The Veterans Reception Center is now open at American Legion Post 403.
It is located just south of the Iowa State Veterans Cemetery.
The $1.6 million dollar project was funded by the state and through private donations.
The reception center is not only open to those in town for burials or to visit the cemetery.
It will also host a monthly breakfast, dinners during the week, and is even available to host events like wedding receptions.
“Some people have in their mind a legion that is exclusive, that’s where the legion members go for a drink in the afternoon. We’ve really focused more on making this a beautiful place of honor for those families to come to,” said Leslie Herman, manager of the Veterans Reception Center.
A grand opening ceremony was held Saturday.
