Construction is a few weeks out for the place formerly known as Nollen Plaza.

Des Moines Performing Arts says more than $11 million has been raised for the Cowles Commons project.

One of the new renovations includes a Des Moines red “carpet.” The red granite stone and brick surface will extend from Capital Square to the Civic Center.

That will replace the sunken amphitheater and wading pool.

“Originally when Nollen Plaza was designed, the original architect was here in Des Moines and he was talking about how Des Moines needed something like a red carpet so you as a visitor know when you’ve arrived in Des Moines, so this new design for Cowles Commons promises to be just that,” says Laura Sweet, VP/CEO of Des Moines Performing Arts.

The iconic umbrella sculpture is being incorporated into the new design.
