Officials with the Iowa Department of Transportation are taking on a controversial issue involving automated traffic cameras this week.

The DOT is proposing a new set of rules designed to give them control over speed and red light cameras on highways and interstates.

Transportation officials will present their case to the legislative committee at the Capitol Tuesday morning.

The rules require cities and counties to prove there’s a critical safety issue at a specific location before cameras would be allowed.
