A semi truck driver is in critical condition after his truck was hit by a train Tuesday night.

It happened just before 7:00 p.m. east of Menlo in Guthrie County.

The State Patrol says 74-year-old Ira Stine of Adel was at the wheel of the semi and didn’t yield to an oncoming train. The train hit behind the cab, splitting the truck into two.

The cab ended up on the south side of the tracks and the trailer on the north side.

Stine was taken by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital.

Hard to yeild to a train when there is NO Crossing Signals or Crossing Arms! Perhaps that major bit of info should be in your news story!!

Looking at the maps, and the visibility at all the crossings east of Menlo, one can hardly blame the accident on lack of warning devices. Kind of hard to miss a freight train to begin with
