Boaters in the metro may want to avoid the Des Moines River and the Birdland Marina for the next couple of days.
City of Des Moines crews are making repairs and resetting flashboards on the Center Street Dam Thursday. That will affect water levels, causing them to be lower for up to two days.
The flashboards are used to help increase the depth of water behind the dam and aren’t normally a permanent fixture, but Des Moines Waterworks requested they be kept up to allow them better access to the river as a source for water.
Boat traffic will have an easier time navigating on the river north of the flashboards because of the higher water levels.
