Protesters gathered in Iowa City Wednesday to speak out against the government shutdown.

KWWL reports the protest was at the Veterans Hospital where the technology department has been furloughed.

Members of the hospital union, The American Federation of Government Employees, protested being off the job.

Patrick Kearns is the president of the chapter. He says it’s important the members get back on the payroll.

“These are folks that have worked here at the government for a long period of time. They’re dedicated to the mission of the hospital, and are being sent home without pay, or being ordered to be here without pay,” says Kearns.

Other protesters say Congress does not understand how the shutdown affects people.
