A newborn baby girl has been surrendered using the state’s Safe Haven law.
The Iowa Department of Human Services says the child was born at home on October 5th. When her mother sought medical attention she asked that the child be declared a safe haven baby.
Officials say this is the 17th child surrendered since the law was passed. It allows parents to surrender babies 14 days or younger without question. All previous safe haven babies have been adopted.
The child is currently being cared for by a foster family. A hearing to terminate the mother’s parental rights will be held within a month.
