Jonathan Lind of the Des Moines Fire Department stopped by to talk about fire safety.  With October being fire safety month, the fire department has asked that people check the battery life and functionality of their smoke detectors as many have a lifespan of just 10 years.

Lind said the fire department recommends that people have at least one smoke detector per floor where they live along with one fire detector per bedroom.

Lind said the fire department also encourages people to buy dual-sensor smoke detectors known as photoelectric fire detectors.  These new detectors are able to detect flaming fires as well as smoldering fires, which often pose a great danger.
