The High Trestle Trail comes to an end on the north side of Ankeny but city officials have a plan to extend it across town.

On Monday night, the city council agreed to a partnership to create a $3-million bike trail extension.

It would start where the trail currently ends at the Ankeny market pavilion on West 1st Street. The extension would travel through the city along abandoned railroad tracks.

It would come to an end just south of I-80.

Ankeny is joining forces with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and Polk County to complete the project.

The three are seeking a state grant to cover some of the costs.
