Senator Tom Harkin had planned to attend a lecture at Drake University Wednesday night, but the recent deal reached by the Senate to end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling is keeping him in Washington, D.C.
Harkin will have to stay for the vote on the deal.
The senator was set to welcome Iceland’s president, Olafur Ragnar Grímsson. He was brought to the university by the Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement.
Grimsson will speak on global warming and Iceland`s successful development of clean energy sources.
Harkin is taping a video message to be played at the lecture.
The lecture is free and open to the public. It starts at 6:30 p.m. at Sheslow Auditorium.
