Thanks to the end of the government shutdown, the Iowa National Guard can fully operate again.
On October 1st, the shutdown meant an unpaid furlough for more than 1,000 employees at the Iowa National Guard. One week later, the Department of Defense returned all but 122 to work without pay.
Those 122 will join the rest of the guard officially back at work Friday.
Colonel Greg Hapgood says their return to work will be cause for celebration, but it will be hard not to worry that something like this might happen again in Washington.
“It certainly also makes you wonder about the future: when will this happen again? And will it be as painful as this or worse,” asked Hapgood.
