The 2014 Iowa Teacher of the Year was named this weekend.
KWWL reports Jane Schmidt has been with the Maquoketa School District for 25 years. Her leadership, passion and ability to connect with students were among the reasons she won the award.
Schmidt is an eighth grade literacy and language arts teacher at Maquoketa Middle School. She also mentors other teachers, helping to refine curriculum and investigate the effects of different teaching practices across the school district.
“What we have done is try to take and expand her impact so that she is not only teaching the in classroom with the students but she is also helping teachers all the way from kindergarten through the twelfth grade to improve their craft,” said Maquoketa School District Superintendent.
Schmidt and the award finalists will be honored at a luncheon for outstanding Iowa teachers on Nov. 8 in Altoona.
