A special election is scheduled for Tuesday to fill a vacant seat at the Statehouse.

Voters in southern Des Moines and Polk County will have to decide between Democrat Des Moines city councilman Brian Meyer or Republican and former U.S. Marine Michael Young of Des Moines.

The special election comes after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy resigned over the summer. The Des Moines Democrat took a position with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.
