World Trade Organization representatives are racing the clock in Geneva to secure a trade package to be considered at the December WTO Ministerial in Bali.
On the table is an Indian-led charge to include the unpopular G33 Food Security Proposal. It would fund the domestic purchase and distribution of cereals to the poor at heavily subsidized prices. But it’s struggling to take flight with India already exceeding its allowable subsidy levels as a WTO member.
Many involved think the proposal’s inclusion will undo progress toward the Bali ministerial, and WTO Director Rober Azevedo is urging consensus on the topic by the end of the month.
